One simple word that forever changed the course of this and I’m sure many other horror fans lives. The man who spoke it, Angus Scrimm passed last night and the genre has lost a true icon.
Angus Scrimm was 89 years old and long time friend and director Don Coscarelli broke the news of his passing to Entertainment Weekly via an email:
“Angus Scrimm passed away peacefully tonight surrounded by his friends and loved one,” [His] performance as the Tall Man is a towering achievement in horror film history. He was the last in a long line of classic horror movie stars. He was a terrific actor and an even better friend. He will be missed.”
Fan outpouring on social media has been immediate and intense further adding weight to the respect the genre garners for this one of a kind actor.
Best known for his portrayal of The Tall Man in the Phantasm series of films Mr. Scrimm enjoyed a long and varied career that ranged from acting to writing liner notes for Capitol Records for the likes of Frank Sinatra and The Beatles. He recently reprised his role of the Tall Man for Phantasm Ravager, which fans are hoping to see later this year.
While the coming days and weeks will bring memorials and remembrances galore I think the best way to celebrate his life would be to pop that Phantasm disc you’re your player and once again experience the work of a true legend of the genre.
RIP Angus Scrimm.
