J.J. Abrams, the mastermind behind LOST, the latest Star Trek incarnation and the upcoming Star Wars: Episode VII is no stranger (no pun intended) to the surreal and mysterious. In interviews and lectures, he often talks of a “mystery box” and how peeling away, layer by layer, revealing little in the process, keeps people intrigued. The prolific filmmaker is at it yet again, revealing a minute-long teaser trailer for an as-of-now unnamed project, through his production company Bad Robot. The trailer is shot in black and white and features a mysterious man, who at one point was bound by rope, washing up on shore. An enigmatic voice over and a Michael Giacchino-esque score accompany the images. The official title of the teaser is Stranger and it ends with an equally mysterious text: “Soon He Will Know”. While the trailer doesn’t give much away, it’s safe to assume one thing: this is most likely not related to Star Wars: Episode VII.

The internet is abuzz with conjecture, one of the more popular theories being that the teaser is linked to a novel Abrams will be publishing in October, titled S. Apart from the title sharing the same first letter as the video, here’s how publisher Mulholland Books, describes the book, written by Doug Dorst: “In his first-ever idea for a novel, Abrams conceived of and developed a multi-layered literary puzzle of love and adventure. At its core, we have a book of mysterious provenance. In the margins, another tale unfolds: hand-scribbled notes, questions, and confrontations between two readers. Between the pages, online, and in the real world, you’ll find evidence of their interaction, ephemera that brings this tale vividly to life.” The key phrase in the description is “Between the pages, online, and in the real world, you’ll find evidence…” could this viral video be part of the “evidence”?
