2013 will be a big year for Insidious director James Wan with two of his films making their way to theaters within 2 months of one another. Having caught attention and reinvented the horror landscape with the original Saw, Wan and writer/collaborator Leigh Whannell have kept audiences on the edge of their seats by spanning across several subgenres, including old school crime films with Death Sentence and atmospheric puppet horror with Dead Silence. His 2010 film, Insidious, saw Wan put his visceral twist on the haunting film, leading to great critical and financial success, making Insidious the sleeper genre hit of the year. Now, the first trailer for Insidious: Chapter 2 has made its way online, and it sees the return of both the original cast as well as writer Whannell, The Purge producer Jason Blum and Wan in the director’s chair once again.
Picking up where the last film left off, Chapter 2 sees the Lambert family attempting to move forward after rescuing their son from evil spirits, despite the horrifying and bleak ending of the first time. This time, however, it seems the spirits have set their sights on the youngest Lambert child, as well as Josh, the father, who had previously encountered the demons in his youth. Chapter 2 will be Wan’s last film before boarding the Fast and Furious franchise as director of the seventh installment.
The trailer for Chapter 2, which can be seen below, promises more of what we have seen before, and the concept will most likely draw parallels between these films and the first two Poltergeist films. While this one seems to keep with the more mystical side of the supernatural, the trailer also hints at the use of effective slow-burn dread, as the first one did. Fans of the director will likely focus in the coming months on Wan’s The Conjuring, releasing from Warner Brothers on July 19th, which follows a similar concept in the 1970’s from the case studies of Ed an Lorraine Warren, which also stars Insidious actor Patrick Wilson.
Insidious: Chapter 2 stars Patrick Wilson, Rose Byrne and Barbara Hershey, and will be in theaters from Film District on September 13, 2013. For more on Chapter 2, The Conjuring and James Wan, check back here at Diabolique Magazine.
