Director Adam Wingard’s You’re Next broke out onto the horror scene to rave critical reviews, twisting the home invasion genre fundamentally in the story of a well-off family that comes under attack and how one member harbors a secret that may give them all a fighting chance. Seemingly reinvigorating the genre, You’re Next was praised for its masterful mix of black humor and horror, though the box office/general movie-going audience ignored the film upon release. Now the creators behind You’re Next are at it again, this time in front of the camera, with their newest film, 24 Exposures.
Written and directed by You’re Next co-star, Joe Swanberg, the film follows a photographer (Next director Adam Wingard) who stages murder and suicide tableaux for his camera and a detective (Next writer Simon Barrett) investigating real killings, whose paths cross when a model is slain. Rounding out the cast is V/H/S actresses Helen Rogers, Hannah Fierman and Sophia Takal, as well as Caroline White and Mike Brune. IFC will release 24 Exposures via it’s IFC Midnight branch in select theaters, on cable VOD and other digital on-demand platforms on January 24. The film debuted at the Fantasia Film Festival in August to warm reviews, and Swanberg previously told Diabolique:
“It’s based on Cinemax/Showtime late night erotic thriller stuff from the early ‘90s. I feel that people have stopped making those kinds of movies. So Adam, Simon and I really dove in and tried to recreate that vibe.”
24 Exposures will be IFC’s second Midnight release of the month, following the highly anticipated Raze on January 10th. Likewise, it will be Swanberg’s next film following his critically acclaimed Drinking Buddies, and will be his first genre directorial effort following his segment in V/H/S. Swanberg will also be debuting his family dramedy, Happy Christmas, next year, and can be seen in Ti West’s The Sacrament later next year as well.
