When news hit the web of Benedict Cumberbatch leaving of Guillermo Del Toro’s Crimson Peak, speculation began on why, as he followed the departure of Emma Stone. Rumors circulated that it was to re-team with J.J. Abrams on Star Wars Episode VII, though representatives on both sides have refuted those claims and claimed Cumberbatch’s exit was not due to scheduling. In light of the supposition, we do have concrete news as to Cumberbatch’s replacement, as The Wrap has reported that Tom Hiddleston will be joining the cast of the haunted house thriller.
Production is scheduled to begin in January, and just further confirms that Hiddleston will not feature heavily, if at all in Avengers: Age of Ultron. This is Hiddleston’s first concrete leading role in a studio horror film, having previously screen-tested for F. Javier Gutierrez’s The Crow. Hiddleston will next be seen in Marvel’s Thor: The Dark World and Jim Jarmusch’s vampire drama, Only Lovers Left Alive. Crimson Peak also stars Pacific Rim’s Charlie Hunnam, Mama‘s Jessica Chastain and Stoker‘s Mia Wasikowska, and begins production this January.
