In the past week the “ice bucket” challenge has been making its rounds across the Internet, helping to spread awareness of ALS and generate money for research. This type of social media activism is great; it proves that ideas are infectious and that one voice does matter. But, unfortunately, not everyone in need is able to generate that type of social impact. This time around it is one of our own who needs our help, BJ Colangelo. Regardless of whether or not her name registers in your head, if you are a horror fan we can assure you that you are probably familiar with her writing. Owning and operating the Day of the Woman Blog, BJ specializes in the feminist perspective of horror films. BJ is the strong, dissenting voice that we need, challenging an industry dominated by male voices.
So you may ask, why does BJ need our help? We could do our best to sum up her situation, but what better way than to hear it from BJ herself:
In March of 2014, I was diagnosed with a rare form of pancreatic cancer at the age of 23. Doctors removed a tennis ball sized tumor, my spleen, 22 lymph nodes, and 40% of my pancreas. The surgery left me out of commission for six months and I am now unable to hold jobs that require standing for long periods of time or lifting more than 25 pounds. As you can imagine, despite having my bachelor’s degree, this is making my search for employment rather difficult. Now I am 24 and happily one of the 4% of people that survive pancreatic cancer, but due to the insane costs, I’m struggling to survive.
I’ve depleted my savings in order to make ends meet and to ensure my medical bills were paid on time, but I’ve finally reached a point where I have to swallow my pride and admit that I need help.
I’ve attached a “Donate” button on the sidebar of my tumblr profile. If anyone out there is willing to help me, even a little, I will be forever grateful. If anyone has any questions or concerns about my battle with cancer or where my donations will go, feel free to send me an ‘ask’ on my tumblr page.
Thank you for your time and consideration,
In times like these we need to come together as a community. So please, if you can spare anything, donate. It might mean buying one less DVD this month, or eating out one less time, but for BJ it’ll mean getting her life back on track, and continuing to provide us with a wealth of entertainment and criticism.
