Writer-director Mariano Baino, whose canon ranges from surrealist horror cinema (1994’s Dark Waters) to mixed-media drawings (2011’s solo exhibition Cyphers and Flames), and co-writer and actress Coralina Cataldi-Tassoni (Demons 2, Opera) have announced their Kickstarter campaign for Astrid’s Saints. Proposed backers with means large and small can help realize the duo’s ambitious psychological-thriller-in-the-making.

According to the campaign’s press release, Cataldi-Tassoni plays the titular Astrid, “a grieving woman who discovers a dark wonderland in a mystical Brooklyn covered in snow.” Baino’s hybrid stylings, which summon the expressionistic likes of Ingmar Bergman and the painterly aesthetic of giallo maestro Dario Argento, are in full swing in Astrid’s Saints, with twinges of the supernatural to boot.

To get Astrid’s Saints off the ground, the pair have been raising funds since Saturday October 15th, aiming to hit a $400,000 budget by their deadline on December 14th at 8 P.M. Apart from the satisfaction of breathing life into homegrown dark art, those aiding Cataldi-Tassoni and Baino in their efforts may stand to reap the benefits of a number of rewards (if you can’t afford an associate producer’s package, photos of the creative team’s pets are up for grabs!).
