For those who do not know, The Television Critics Association is a collection representing journalists across the country that do full-time reporting for publications about television. It is meant to be an insider’s track for those writers that do not live near the entertainment hubs of America like New York or Los Angeles. Twice a year, the TCA does press tours in order for their members to get a chance for the face-to-face reporting with those involved in making television. This year’s summer tour wraps up on Aug. 7th, but last week FX had its turn to show off some of its big hits coming along later this year, including the highly-anticipated third season of the genre-hit American Horror Story.
American Horror Story’s showrunner, Tim Minear, took the stage along with actresses Kathy Bates, Jessica Lange, Sarah Paulson and Angela Bassett to talk about their upcoming season, subtitled “Coven.” The season will focus on a coven of witches that have relocated to New Orleans after the Salem witch trials. Minear, referring to his cast as a “murderers’ row of actresses,” touched briefly on the themes of the upcoming season which he says are to include, “oppression of minorities; minority groups going after each other and doing the work of the larger culture.” Audiences can be expecting more of a “feminist theme” and a higher “fun quotient” that Minear hopes “might be a little more welcoming to an audience.”
The actresses each had a turn to do some brief revelations about who they will be playing in the upcoming season. Kathy Bate will portray famed real-life serial killer and Louisiana socialite Marie Delphine LaLaurie who was revealed to be involved in the torture and murder of slaves, including the infamous “human crab” myth that has become associated with her actions. Jessica Lange and Sarah Paulson will portray mother/daughter witches, with Lange portraying the mother, Fiona, and Paulson playing her daughter, Cordelia. Finally, Angela Bassett will be playing the Louisiana Creole and Voodoo priestess, Marie Laveau.
Those who feel the details put forth from the press tour about the characters, plot, and storylines for the upcoming season are suspiciously quiet are not alone. It seems a lot of this season is being kept a mystery, even from the actresses themselves. Jessica Lang spoke up about all the secrecy, “It’s been a huge adjustment to work this way without knowing for sure or knowing at all who the character is. It allows you to work very much on the fly. The great thing about this entire cast is that you have to be brave. You just have to jump in and do it and not be cautious because you’ve got 12 episodes to create this character.”
Filming on the upcoming season has already started and it is slated to premiere on FX in October. For those interested in checking out the past two seasons from American Horror Story can find Season 1 on DVD and Blu-Ray, as well as on Netflix, but will have to wait until October for the release of the second season, American Horror Story: Asylum, on Blu-Ray and DVD.
